A very interesting and enjoyable hour and a quarter with a Emrys as he talked his way around the old walled town. We thoroughly recommend this guided tour to visitors and locals alike. Glen & Geraint, Rhyl. August 2011

We would like to thank you for the guided tour. We found it both interesting and entertaining. Your knowledge of local history spiced with your good humour really made for an entertaining visit to your wonderful city. We will recommend you to our friends. Thanks very much. Just wanted to thank you so much for the guided walk around Caernarfon  on the 15th August 2011- you made it so interesting and humorous. We never knew there were so many interesting facts about Caernarfon ! Many Thanks again Elwyn & Ceinwen

“Most visitors to Caernarfon focus their attention, quite naturally, on the magnificent castle of Edward I. The town walls were, however, a vital integral element of the original 13th cent. concept. It is truly amazing that they have survived seven hundred years in such excellent condition. I toured the town walls with Emrys in the summer of 2010 and was fascinated by his Caernarfon stories and anecdotes. I recommend a tour of the town walls with Emrys as guide to all visitors to Caernarfon.”    Robert Dean, Zurich, Switzerland.

We were in Caernarfon after a rugby festival in Scotland and went with Emrys Llewelyn for his my town, my walk tour. We enjoyed the experience of a local man with so many facts and stories both funny and sad. We would recommend Mr Jones’ tour to anyone visiting Caernarfon. Shona, Graham and Tony – Brisbane Australia.

Wonderful, one of the best tours we found on our tour of Europe and very reasonably priced as well. Garry and Judith – Durban South Africa

A man after my own heart, history and rugby all in one walk. We have told our friends in Newfoundland that when in Wales find the Caernarfon guide. Frank, Mary and friends – Canada

Many thanks Emrys for an entertaining and enjoyable saunter around Caernarfon. Emrys clearly knows his historical stuff and presents it in an amusing, user-friendly manner while taking you around a town steeped in history. There is much more to that history than the towering Edwardian castle and taking one of Emrys’s tours is an excellent introduction to it. Verdict  – Highly recommended and excellent value for money. Rose and Gwyn Jones, Penarth, Glamorgan.

An excellent tour of Caernarfon, full of fascinating details and entertaining stories. Emrys manages to bring the town alive – both past and present, drawing attention to the small things we fail to notice as we go about our daily lives. Brilliant! Angharad Price

We had a great time on the walk and you were so entertaining…your tour was one of the highlights of the trip for my Americans.
I’m so sorry we missed you this morning. We had an excellent breakfast at The Black Boy, left Castell at 9.30 and spent an hour in the magnificent Castle before moving on to Conwy.
I would love to buy one of your Doors of Caernarfon posters…..is it possible to post one ? If not, I will make sure I get one from you when I am next in Caernarfon.
Thank you so much for the walk. I will certainly be in touch if I have another tour to the town.

Emrys,

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of getting to know you and your beautiful town during our stay in Caernarfon. We feel very fortunate that your tour was recommended to us by our hotel staff. It was even luckier for us that we were the only two on that particular tour, so we got to know you better and hear even more of your wonderful stories. It was a highlight of our trip that we will always remember. Thank you for sharing your great knowledge and your time with us.

Hello Emrys. Thanks for the tour around caernarfon. There is much more to caernarfon than i had previously thought. It was very interesting going around the streets, learning how times have changed to build the city that stands today.

Dear Emrys,
I had a wonderful time last Monday walking the streets of Caernarfon
with you. Your knowledge of the town and its history added a wonderful
dimension to my visit there. You asked for any suggestions I might have. I have only one: that it
might have been useful to have a map available on the walk. It would
have helped me get a better feel of the layout of the town, plus I might
have marked off sites I was interested in coming back to. As it was,
though, I was able to impress my business colleagues with my knowledge
when they arrived the next day (albeit without your expertise). Thanks again,I would like to say huge Thank you for the tour we went on in Caernarfon. It was fun, interesting, humorous and engaging. I found I was enchanted with the town the more I learned about the history. I have visited the town many times before but after the tour I felt I looked at the place with new eye’s. I felt I’d had a glimpse into the heart and soul of Caernarfon and I am looking forward to our next visit.Susan from New York

Hi Emrys
I would like to say a huge Thank you for the guided tour we came on 11th July. We thoroughly enjoyed it and was the perfect close to our holiday. It was fun informative and brought some of Caernarfon’s history and heritage to light. We have always been fond of Caernarfon but after the tour we felt we experienced the true heart and soul of the place. We would appreciate if you could keep us up to date with fourth coming events which you mentioned in your tour for September. We are also interested in your book. If possible could you please let us know when it is published in English and where we can purchase a copy. We do respect this may not be possible as you are very busy. It was a pleasure meeting you Emrys and we wish you every success with your future venture’s and games of Rugbykind regards

Emrys took seven of us round Caernarfon this morning, and gave us a fascinating insight into its history and buildings. I have personally been coming on holiday to the Llŷn for 50 years, and visited Caernarfon often, but he showed me how much I had been missing. It was great to be able to walk along the old walls, and hear how the long history of the town is reflected by the remaining buildings. An excellent tour.

“Must do when you in Caernarfon!”

Very friendly, entertaining and informative. Very much enjoyed our walk, Emrys has made us forget the very cold wintery weather; he was available on last minute and did the tour very professionally despite of it was only two of us. He even added some good personal stories and taught us some welsh language. The town’s population is almost 10k, and he seems to know 90% of them although he denies it, you’ll see 🙂
Message to the owner of the book shop: Put Emrys book back to the window display! 🙂

On a cold January day a quick phone call to Emrys Llewelyn confirmed he was available for one of his famous guided walks around the walled town of Caernarfon.
And what a wonderful hour and a half it was, there can be few things that Emrys does not know about the history of this wonderful town. The information and interesting facts about the people who used to live and work here kept the cold at bay, and our time with him passed all too soon!
We would strongly recommend any of Emrys’s guided walks!! 😉

Very professional with facts , fiction and stories pointing out good places to eat , drink etc. along the way,. Would highly recommend . We went as 2 adults but I am sure he would have children entertained as well,

A group of 4 of us joined Emrys for his Town Tour over the bank holiday weekend and had a fantastic hour long walk around Caernarfon with him.
Emrys is born and bred in Caernarfon and there doesn’t seem to be anything he doesn’t know about the place. His passion for his home town is very clear and that makes the walk all the better. Apart from the historical aspect, he gives you a lot of additional quirky and more personal facts about the place and, to top it off, we were able to walk along part of the town wall with him; a treat reserved only for those who have a gate key!

Although we had already had a look round part of the town, Emrys really gave us an insight into Caernarfon’s history and buildings. He took us through all the back streets and explained how they had developed. He seems to know everyone in the town.
Definitely recommended if you want a walking tour.

Dear Emrys,

Thank you again for the personal tour of Caernarfon last Saturday, I learned so much about the town from you, and it is going to be invaluable for the book. In the afternoon I spent a long time in the Castle. I will certainly be thanking you in my author’s note, and as promised will send copies when it is published next year. I hope we can stay in touch in the meanwhile. I certainly felt we became friends. I hope you enjoyed your lunch!
It was fun to hear about your activities in the old days. It must have been so interesting to be in Caernarfon then.
I did have one question I forgot to ask. Where was the local police station in 1965?

I would seriously recommend Emrys Jones’ Caernarfon Town walking tours to anyone able to walk! He is in the first place a tour guide par excellence! He knows the town like the back of his hand and he will introduce you to all its interesting old buildings and places of interest. More than likely he will introduce you to many of it’s local characters who frequently come up to him to exchange some snippet of lively interest as the tour progresses. He is a mine of local knowledge with a sack full of anecdotes, historical information and sheer good humour! And there is such a lot that he has to share with you! A “Cofi Dre'” all his life he is the genuine article! He is completely at home showing you the old town walls, it’s towers and turrets and features of note,- and if you are really fortunate he will give you a tour of the Roman settlement at Segontium where he is completely at home! I have done the tour and walked the walk! It is really good, worthwhile and more to the point worth every penny! Go for it! ”

“Absolute must when in Caernarfon!”

Going to Wales for the first time I thought it would be good to go for organised sightseeing tour. Worried that I might struggle with getting a spot I booked a place few days in advance, yet upon arrival it turned out that I was the only one. In spite of that Emrys wasn’t discouraged and gave me the best town tour I could have hoped for!
You rarely come across someone as passionate about their hometown as Emrys – ho not only introduced me to local history but also told me a lot about what’s currently going on in town and recommended great places to eat.
If you’re going to Caernarfon, even if you’re not a history fan, make sure to go for a tour with Emrys. It’s worth it for all of the fun stories, town trivia and that wonderful, friendly man himself!

I found “Town Tour” Caernarfon on TA the day before we were due a “free” half day in Caernarfon mid way through a coach trip to North Wales. His knowledge & facts were encyclopaedic; his delivery engaging, enthusiastic & humorous. I recommend him to anyone who wants to discover Caernarfon past & present. The only qualification I would add is that it is a walking tour so may not be suitable for some. A great pleasure, thank you Emrys.

“Caernarfon history brought to life.”

“A day in Caernarfon”

The town’s origins go back to at least the Roman occupation in the first century AD. The combination of history, the variety of shops, ancient roads and passages make Caernarfon an interesting town. The swing bridge which allows tall vessels to access the harbour is interesting. There are plenty of cafés where good food, made on the premises, can be obtained at reasonable prices. The shops are varied and interesting, with one selling upmarket outdoor clothing, such as Harris Tweed products. Caernarfon is a town where Welsh can be heard spoken frequently. This is a town I would like to visit again and perhaps tour the castle next time.
A foot note. I found a darts accessories shop which had a set of flights containing the Black Country flag, comprising a background of black, red, white, the white is in the shape of a glass cone, with a chain superimposed. I thought it strange to find such a specialised set of flights in Caernarfon, so far from the English Midlands. This is an example of the variety of shops to be found in Caernarfon.

Dear Emrys,

Thank you so much for the great history lesson on our Caernarfon walk! You are a wealth of information.

Jan, at Victoria House, said you very graciously offered to check for more information about my Caernarfon heritage. That would be absolutely wonderful.

My great (to the fifth generation) grandfather was Lewis Evans (1716-1762) and married Sarah (do not have her maiden name) (1710-1803) and came to the U.S. from what is listed in our family history as Caernarvonshire, Wales in 1752. Lewis died at the age of 46, his wife surviving him many years and died a the age of 93.

Son of Lewis and Sarah, my great (to the fourth generation) grandfather, Jeremiah Evans was three years old when they made the voyage to the U.S. His brother, Able, was born on the voyage! Lewis and Sarah’s other children accompanying them to the U.S. included Daniel, John, Barbara and Sarah.

This is all the information I have, but it would be incredible to get any further background regarding my roots. I truly felt connected to Caernarfon as we walked the Square and the surrounding area.

Thank you for the fabulous experience!

Our best to you and your wife.

Thank you Emrys for bringing the walled town to life in such a warm and enthusiastic manner on a cold winter’s day. As a proud “Cofi”, Emrys respects his heritage and the town’s inhabitants so his great sense of humour comes from within. When I go on holiday I always search for a reputable guided service to improve the experience so it’s great to be able to report that Caernarfon has a quality provision.

Amazing stories and a fantastic guide”
Make no mistake. You do this guided tour because of Emrys. There is no other reason to do it. He is such a character, full of funny stories. Of course, every person who walks past that he knows (and there is a lot) will always shout “Don’t believe a word he says!” with a grin. But it matters not, as the stories are told with such character and passion that it makes the whole walk so much more memorable. On the day he took us round, he was not at all well as he had a heavy cold, but that didn’t stop his enthusiasm or slowed him down. If there is such a thing a Caernarfon’s local historian, he was it. Excellent!

Emrys,

Just to say thank you very much for the guided tour on Sunday 24th April 2016, we were wondering what to do that day and saw your sign by the Black Boy Inn.

“Great walking tour with a knowledgeable and passionate local guide”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We met Emrys on a wet morning in Caernarfon beside the Lloyd George statue in the square. He is a local man, born and raised in Caernarfon, who has been involved in developing the town, and the Welsh language all of his life. He knows everyone – on every single street, someone came up to him and greeted him, usually in Welsh.

His knowledge of the history of the town, and of the conservation efforts made to protect it, are both comprehensive. We learnt a lot about the town, its history, literature, art and architecture. He’s lively, a great speaker, and enormous fun.

If you are in Caernarfon, join his walking tour. You won’t regret it.

Hello Emrys,

I hugely enjoyed this walking tour!
A gently paced walk around the historical old town centre of Caernarfon, it’s packed with historical facts,
amusing anecdotes and Emrys conveys a genuine passion for the town through all its ages,
as well as for the secrets still lurking underground and behind some of the (for now) inaccessible bits.
My visiting friends really appreciated learning so much about Caernarfon
in such an entertaining way, and as a local I was surprised how much I didn’t know or
hadn’t noticed before. An excellent introduction to Caernarfon, highly recommended.

Hi Emrys,

Thanks for guiding us around Caernarfon on 12th July. We really enjoyed hearing all the stories and history, including spotting the Caernarfon doors and also identifying some others that should be added to the collection! So many interesting streets and buildings, as well as plans for opening up bits of the town walls. A great way to learn about the town’s heritage.

Hi Emrys,

Thank you for a wonderful tour of Caernarfon today – thoroughly enjoyed the history, stories, and your own personal experiences of the town. My wife and I are thoroughly convinced that you do know all the residents of the town!

Would love to read your book once the translation is out

You were an excellent guide with such a wonderful knowledge of Caernarfon.

Emrys, I want to thank you for the wonderful guided tour of Caernarfon on 1 April 2017.

There were 4 of us from the USA (3 ladies and our 1 man)!!!

We very much enjoyed listening to you share the history and lore of
the town and the Welsh people.

Your deep knowledge and obvious passion for your country is a great
tribute to the town of Caernarfon and the country of Wales.

Please keep me notified when your book is published in English .

Good luck with the historical society.

Private tour for 2.

What a treat to get to know Caernarfon with Emrys. He loves his own town and this shines through. I thought I knew the town a bit but there is sooo much more to it with a tour with Emrys. He has humour and information, quirky things, historical things and everyone in the town knows him and greets him as you go around.
An entertaining morning indeed.

Really enjoyable

We really enjoyed our 1h40m with Emrys on the last Saturday of May. He is quite a character, really knowledgeable and with a contagious love for his city. It made the rest of our stay in Caernarfon much more interesting as we had gotten to know the history of the streets and buildings inside the wall. And despite what he says, he really does seem to know everyone in town!

Wonderful introduction to Caernarfon

We booked this tour with Emrys for our first full day in Caernarfon–and it was a great introduction! Emrys himself is entertaining, enthusiastic, and informative–he is passionate about Caernarfon and Wales, and we really learned a lot from him about Welsh and the Welsh people. We saw the major attractions and the less-well known byways of the city; this gave us the background to make plans for the week. Emrys must know everyone in town; he was able to tell about everything from major historical events to enlightening local interest issues. He spent two hours showing the two of us around; it was very personalized and centered on our interests, and he answered many questions.
This was a highlight of our trip!

Extremely highly recommended

I take a class of university students from southern Germany around Wales every year and each excursion ends in Caernarfon with a guided tour from Emrys. The response of the groups has been universally positive. He is one of the very few tour guides who can get an ideal balance of fact, legend and enthusiasm for a place that not only introduces each person to the location and its history, but also its people.

I did not like the tour, I LOVED IT!!!!

A very well organised walk and a clearly presented story of the city punctuated with funny anecdotes that make Emyrs’ walk an experience not to be missed while in Caernarfon.

An amazing tour by Emrys

We often stay in Anglesey but have never walked around Caernarfon.
Emrys was full of information, humour and passion for his birth town.
We walked the streets and discovered everything there was to know about the buildings and those no longer there due to ‘modernisation’.
It is an amazing place full of history, architecture, places to eat and drink, and of course the spectacular castle.
If you are anywhere in this area, I would recommend you book this tour, you will not be disappointed.

Bhain mé an-taitneamh as an turas a rinne mé le Emrys an lá faoi dheireadh. Thug sé turas suimiúil, taitneamhach agus spreagúil dúinn. D’fhág mé an Bhreatain Bheag le tuiscint níos fear ar an gcultúr, stair agus traidisúin an tír iontach seo! Na Celtigh abú!

I thoroughly enjoyed the guided walking tour with Emrys when I was in Caernarfon. He provided a great, enjoyable and inspirational tour for us. I left Wales with a much better understanding of the culture, history and tradition of this great country. Up the Celts!

Our Summer Trip 2017.

Rhyl History Club has had many and various Summer outings over the years – and almost without exception they have been hugely enjoyable. This year’s trip to Caernarfon yesterday was a great success, a good time was had by all. In the morning some of our group visited the castle, including the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, others visited Segontium. An excellent lunch was taken at the famous historic inn – The Black Boy. However, the highlight of the day was our afternoon “Town Tour – a guided walk through the streets of the Medieval town of Caernarfon” with our informative and entertaining guide Emrys Llewelyn.

Emrys is passionate about his town and is exceedingly knowledgeable about its history. He has wonderfully humorous style, weaving anecdotes and funny stories into the wealth of history that he presents. Thoroughly recommended!! See Trip Advisor for more reviews

Many thanks, on behalf of Rhyl History Club, for the wonderful tour yesterday. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. I have tried to leave a comment on Trip Advisor – it hasn’t shown yet, if I don’t see it in the next day or two I’ll try again.

I have done a little “write up” on our website/blog which we also share on Facebook and twitter:

Feel free to share our blog too!

Many thanks once again,

An enjoyable tour of Caernarfon
Myself and eight others booked a tour with Emrys. I have been to Caernarfon quite a lot however don’t know much about the history of the town. I found out some interesting facts along the way. You can tell how passionate Emrys is about his town by his enthusiasm when telling stories!

Overall a great experience.

Great tour great character!
Spent an hour and three quarters with Emrys. He was a great guide with humour mixed with passion about his town. His love of the town, the language and all things Welsh made it a well worthwhile afternoon.

Hope you get your heritage centre Emrys. When you start your funding appeal give me a shout!

The best way to learn about a town
We we’re met promptly by Emrys in Market Square. What a great guy. He obviously knows ‘his stuff’ but he imparts his knowledge in language that you can understand. I particularly liked the fact that when he touched on a subject and told you he’d tell you more about it later-he did. An excellent way to learn about the town.

We recently spent a long weekend in Caernarfon, as we hadn’t been before we thought it a good idea to do a town walk with Emrys. We didn’t know what to expect as we just had to phone to make arrangements. Wow! What a guy! I don’t think i have ever know anyone so knowledgeable and passionate about where they live. It was interesting and all his personal anecdotes were so entertaining. We left him knowing a lot more about Caernarfon. Every town should have an Emrys! We wish him the best of luck with his projects.

Great character, great experience

We met Emrys by Lloyd George statue with Annwen’s American cousin who wanted to learn about towns history as his grandfather had left North Wales for America in 1800s.The whole tour was so interesting. He took time and was so patient, knowledgeable and funny.

A great walking tour!

We booked a walking tour of Caernarfon with Emrys just by dropping him an email. He got back to us immediately and we met him at 11am on a Saturday morning. Emrys is such a lovely guy who truly loves Caernarfon (and Wales) and it was a pleasure to spend time with him getting to know more about the history of the town, the language and what the future developments n Caernarfon will be. Everyone knows Emrys in Caernarfon and we thoroughly enjoyed being shown around by someone who so clearly loves where he lives.
Thank you Emrys!

Hello Emrys,

Thanks for the photos and thanks also for the guided tour which was fascinating and highly entertaining. I will post something suitably eulogistic on Trip Advisor.

Meanwhile, here is a picture of a legendary Welshmen and some bloke from Manchester called Dave George.

cael diwrnod da,

Great fun

There is not much that Emrys does not know about Caernarfon, nor many people he does not know! A wonderful way to spend time learning about a place that is steeped in history and tradition. Possibly the best £10 I have spent for many years – Kent September 2017

Thank you for our guided tour today. We enjoyed ourselves very much and learnt such a lot about the town
Gill and Paul Thomas Liverpool – October 2017

During the walk which was for three people from Ulster, on the day Ireland beat Wales in the rugby.
We had a good wind up which help to add humour to the trip. A knowledgeable guide who knows just a few people in the area.
The pace was slow enough for us to keep up and interesting enough to keep us there.
Afterwards we where invited to the Yatch Club to watch a good match, and an ever better victory.
Hope by now Emrys you have got over it.

We enjoyed our recent walk with you around Caernarfon, Mary especially as it is her home town.                                                                                                                                                                                      Not only were we impressed with your knowledge of history but your involvement with conserving heritage where possible to make Caernarfon a more attractive place to visit.

Hope you can continue your entertainimg walks for a while yet.

RegardsEmrys,
